FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

What is the acceptance rate for manuscripts submitted to the Journal?

Approximately 60% of manuscripts submitted to the Journal are accepted for publication.

What is the refereeing procedure for Journal manuscripts?

Manuscripts submitted to the Journal are initially reviewed for suitability by the Technical Editor-in-Chief. Then, using an extensive database of environmental experts who have published within the last 12 months, the Technical Editor-in-Chief forwards manuscripts to reviewers with expertise in the appropriate subject areas. A minimum of three reviews is required for each Journal manuscript. Reviewer and Editor comments are forwarded to the primary author for rebuttal and revisions. If the revisions meet the reviewers’ and Editor’s approval, the manuscript is formally accepted for publication in the Journal.

What is Rapid Review?

Rapid ReviewÓ is a Web-based peer review system developed and owned by Cadmus Communications Corporation. On May 1, 2003, the Journal began using Rapid Review (version 2.0) to manage online submittal and peer-review of its manuscripts. Journal authors and reviewers can access Rapid Review anytime—day or night—to quickly and easily submit or review manuscripts, monitor progress and due dates, complete necessary forms and paperwork, query editorial staff, and other related functions.

What is the Journal’s policy regarding submittal of previously published material?

With the following exceptions, previously published work will not be considered for publication in the Journal:

  • Papers presented at conferences sponsored by the Air & Waste Management Association and
  • Works published in abstract form or as part of a published lecture, review, or thesis.

What is the Journal’s page charge policy and why is it necessary?

The Journal established a mandatory author page-charge policy in 1997 to help offset the increasing costs of producing a monthly technical publication. As of May 2003, page charges are $79/Journal page for A&WMA members, $89/page for all others. Authors are invoiced for page charges when they receive page proofs of the articles, and full payment must be received before publication. Payment of page charges entitles the primary or corresponding author to a PDF copy of the published paper for limited distribution—rights and limitations will be conveyed along with PDF.

How can I obtain reprints of Journal articles?
