2008 Joint Conference Student Program
WELCOME
STUDENTS!
The Annual Conference
Student Program is designed to create and enhance learning and networking
opportunities for, among, and between you and the broader ISEA &
ISEE membership and conference attendees. At this year’s meeting
in Pasadena, several student-focused activities are being planned:
STUDENT POSTER
COMPETITION
The Annual Student
Poster Competition has been scheduled during the Opening Reception
on Sunday evening, October 12. This competition provides a unique
opportunity for students to practice and perfect their critical thinking
and oratory skills by presenting their research to a panel of judges,
student peers, and other meeting attendees. Each society will select
posters to receive awards as described below.
Instructions for
the Student Poster Competition:
1) Be prepared
to present your poster TWICE during the Annual Meeting -- once at
the competition on Sunday October 12th, and a second time during the
regularly scheduled session assigned to you by the conference organizers.
a. Student Poster competition participation is ABOVE AND BEYOND your
presentation during the regular conference sessions. If your regular
conference presentation is an oral one but you would like to participate
in the Student Competition, you will need to prepare a “posterized”
version for the Sunday competition. If you are presenting a poster
at the regular conference session, you will need to present the poster
twice, once during the competition on Sunday night and once during
the regularly scheduled conference poster session. If you have multiple
presentations during the regular conference sessions, select one for
the student poster competition (if you have both oral and poster presentations
during the regular conference sessions, you may select your poster
or prepare a “posterized” version of your oral presentation
for the student competition).
2) At the Sunday poster competition, each competitor will be required
to present his/her poster(s) in a pre-assigned area for review. Posters
will be grouped by research topics to enhance student communication
and networking during the Sunday reception.
3) Competitors will need to stand near their poster during the judging
and be prepared to answer questions about their work. If approached
by the review panel, competitors will be asked to summarize their
poster in a two-minute oral presentation and to respond to questions
raised about their research by the viewing judges.
Competition
Eligibility Requirements:
Students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program
(masters or doctoral) at a university or college and who are involved
in an original research program in exposure, epidemiology, or health
sciences are eligible to participate.
Review Process:
A panel of judges with members from each society will be assembled.
The panel will review the student abstracts in advance of the Sunday
poster presentations. Final judging will occur ONLY during the competition,
concurrent with the opening reception.
Awards:
ISEA Awards:
1. One 1st place = $500
2. One 2nd place = $300
3. One 3rd place = $150
4. Two Honorable Mentions, each to include a free one-year student
membership in ISEA
ISEE Awards:
Three $300 awards will be presented.
TRAVEL GRANTS
The 2008 Joint
Conference Program Committee will be awarding travel grants to students
(and new investigators) engaged in research activities relevant to
the respective societies. Awards are competitive, with the following
factors being considered:
• Scientific quality of any submitted meeting presentation or
poster abstracts
• Applicants from developing countries and countries with weak
currencies
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
FOR STUDENT MEMBERS
• Designated
“Student Tables” will be identified during conference
lunches, so students can sit with their peers and members of the Student
Subcommittee, if desired (not required).
• A designated location at the Pasadena Convention Center will
be identified as a “Student Meeting Place” for the duration
of the conference, to provide a gathering place for social, academic,
and mingling opportunities for student participants.
• A joint workshop and reception for students and new researchers
(co-sponsored by the New Researchers Network) will be held on Tuesday
evening October 14 to provide professional and social networking opportunities
for attendees.
• To facilitate informal networking, names of local restaurants
and sign-up sheets will be made available at the Student Meeting Place.
Students can initiate a gathering by starting a sheet and posting
it for additional conference attendees to sign-up.
