Tuesday afternoon, October 16, will be free time to explore the local area. We have three pre-arranged tours for you to select from or you may opt to go out on your own.

Tour of EPA/NIEHS campuses - $10/person [Limit: 50 people]

Tour of Duke University - $10/person [Limit: 50 people]

Tour of historic downtown Durham - $3/person [Limit: 50 people]
Two guided walking tours are available:


(1) Durham’s Tobacco Heritage – a walking tour that delves into the industry that literally put Durham on the map. Stories of tobacco warehouse workers, farmers, musicians, and others bring this history to life. Approximately 2 hours in length.

(2) Durham’s Civil Rights Legacy – a walking tour that examines the times, the people, and the businesses that gave a unique flavor to the Durham protest movement. Approximately 1.5 hours in length. Each tour will depart from the Durham Marriott. Please check the associated web links for more information. Space is limited, so sign up early to ensure your selection. As tour information becomes available, it will be posted on the ISEA 2007 meeting website. Check back often!


Informal arranged activity on Tuesday afternoon

Join Michael Jayjock and Charles Rodes for an afternoon of golf at the Duke golf course. Contact Michael to sign up. More information about the Duke golf course can be found at the course web site

  • beautiful setting, a Robert Trent Jones design
  • recently underwent a massive upgrade with private endowment funding for each hole
  • after the upgrade the course was selected to host the mens NCAA golf championship
  • delightful but challenging, especially at the discounted rate!

On your own activities on Tuesday afternoon

The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area has a wide variety of activities that may interest you. Shopping, sightseeing, hiking, museums, visiting the local universities, and the State Fair are just a few of the many activities that you may enjoy while in the Research Triangle Park area. Please check with the Durham Chamber of Commerce representative at the conference or use the links on the meeting website (under Visitor Information).

Duke Gardens Reception on Tuesday evening – Grand Social Event
$45/person ($25/student) [Limit: 200 people]
Join us for great food and friendship at the beautiful Duke Gardens on the Duke University campus. Ground transportation will depart from the Durham Marriott at approximately 6:15 pm and whisk you away to the Gardens, returning you to the Durham Marriott at approximately 9:45 pm. While at the Duke Gardens, tour the grounds, eat great food, and enjoy good entertainment with your colleagues. More information can be found at the Duke Gardens web site.
